Sharing is caring!

Seasonal homemaking is the desire to live in sync with nature and bring the current season deeper into our lives and homes. The Spring season is a time to get out and start doing again! After the long winter months, the sunny days and warmer weather are so welcome. So in this post, I share 9 spring homemaking ideas to infuse the spring season into your home and life.

Open the Windows for Spring Homemaking

Once those warmer days start, open those windows as often as possible! It is refreshing to just let the fresh spring air circulate in your home. I turn all my ceiling fans to spin in the counter-clockwise direction as well; this will keep the cooler air downward for the warmer spring & summer weather. It will allow me to have more days of open windows and use fans instead of starting up the air conditioner. Thus this saves a little bit of money, too.

Do Some Spring Cleaning

While you are up there changing the ceiling fan direction, might as well wipe down those fan blades, too. Spring cleaning is one of the least fun things to do, but I always feel better about my home when I know I’ve taken the time to do the deep cleaning.

Do Any Household Projects that are Best Done in Spring or Fall

For example, last spring we did some work on our roof and added heavy-duty insulation. Because of the nature of the task, it’s best done in the more temperate months of spring or fall.

One option is to list out all the projects you would like to do in your home, and then plan for when they are best accomplished seasonally. This also helps give a timeline of tasks and allows for time to save up the money for them instead of paying with debt.

Put the Laundry on the Clothesline to Dry

There is nothing like the smell of fresh clean items right off the clothesline. Of course, this is something we can do year-round, but I tend to skip out on doing it in wintertime. So once those warm, sunny days begin again, I get the urge to put the laundry on the line.

Eat In-Season Foods

Check out this website, Seasonal Food Guide.org to find out what is in-season in your area. Or you can just check out your local farmers’ markets to pick up seasonal veggies and fruits that will also support local farmers directly.

Change Your Routine

If you are like me and follow a basic daily routine, it may be time to re-evaluate it. During the wintertime, I would do all of my inside chores in the morning and spend the afternoons outside because that was the warmest part of the day. But now that the spring and summer months are upon us, I flipped my schedule and do my outside time in the morning when it’s not too hot yet and do the inside chores in the afternoon. This allows me to water the garden in the morning, too.

In the summer, a lot of scheduled activities outside the home change as well. Some programs or activities take a break for the summer, while others are just starting up. It’s good to have seasonal shifts in routines, to best accommodate your life in the current time.

Decorate Your Home With Fresh Flowers for Spring Homemaking

I absolutely love bringing in fresh-cut flowers from my perennial gardens. You can place it on your kitchen table as a centerpiece, on the windowsill over the sink, or on the nightstand. When you walk by them, the natural fragrance and colors will bring a smile to your face and bring freshness to your home. Especially after a long winter!
This has become a wonderful activity for my 3 year old son and I to do together. Every week we go out and pick flowers and put them into vases on each of our nightstands.

Spring Clean your Wardrobe

It’s time to put the heavy winter clothes away and bring out the spring/summer wardrobe. Try everything on and see what clothes you still enjoy from last year. See if everything fits or if it needs some mending done to it. Assess if anyone in your family needs any summer clothes now.

One thing I’ve learned about clothes in recent years is that you really don’t need much.

Many women wouldn’t want to say this, but I knew I’d never fit into much of my pre-pregnancy wardrobe, and that’s okay. In my case, I’m healthier now and it would be unrealistic and unhealthy for me to want to be my pre-pregnancy size again. I have clothes that make me feel good now, for the woman I am right now. Anything that doesn’t feel good now goes to donations, without resistance.

Also, watching how children change their whole wardrobe every few months, was just another realization of how we don’t really need much. We just need the basics; what we actually use.

Having a basic wardrobe that you love with pieces that serve a purpose for you is what matters. So spring clean your wardrobe as well.

Get into the Garden for Spring Homemaking

Start your planting. Whether it’s flowers or orchards, grapevines or vegetable & fruit gardens; plant something this year. A small window box garden or some container gardens on the front porch will still get you outside and into the dirt. And probably get you hooked on gardening once you bite into that first tomato and see that first bloom.

Planting seeds are so symbolic of springtime. It’s a time of newness and excitement, adventure and promise for the year ahead. Take that feeling to other areas of your life as well. Sometimes we just need to open the windows of our minds and hearts and get rid of the negative or stagnant thoughts and plant hope. Clear out the old and what is no longer working for you and plant the new; ideas, books to read, hobbies, routines, etc. Think about the year ahead. What do you want to do before the next winter?
